The department is prosecuting individuals for illegal voting, fraudulent voter registration, and related election crimes.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced charges and guilty pleas regarding 12 individuals connected to illegal voting, fraudulent voter registration, and related election crimes across the country.
The department stated, “The cases include voting by aliens in federal elections, false claims of U.S. citizenship to register or vote, false statements on citizenship applications, and the alleged disposal of approximately 300 mail-in ballots by a former postal carrier.”
Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald of the Fraud Division reported that at least 50 noncitizens have been charged for election-related crimes. “America’s elections are for Americans,” he said.
“Every single vote that was at the hands of an illegal [immigrant], canceled out a citizen that was legally registered and able to vote,” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said. “One is too many, but the fact that we have 300,000 cases we’re looking into right now and 1,620 cases that are under investigation, and 151 arrests is unacceptable.”
The Supreme Court decided last week that the Department of Homeland Security could use the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) service to assess citizenship for voter eligibility.
